A BLUE CHRISTMAS SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE AND HOPEWeeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:5)
The joyous decorations on streets and in shopping malls, the wonderful smells of warm apple cider filling cafés, bells ringing in musical refrains on radio, television and smart telephones, friends and family gathering for parties and holiday merriment, the laughter and skipping of children along the neighborhood sidewalks – it’s all about happiness of the Christmas Season! Yet, for many of us, this season is not a happy time of year. The death of a loved one, caring for a child with cancer, the anguish of a broken relationship or divorce, sadness in being unable to have a child, loneliness or isolation, living with a non-communicable disease, cancer or some other ailment, concern for a loved one’s safety away serving this nation in the military, coping with the loss of a pet, struggling to deal with unemployment, experiencing burnout, make us feel “blue” in the midst of Christmas cheer. We hurt and are simply unable to get into the festivities.
If this is you, please know you are not alone. We acknowledge your feelings. We invite you to come to Old Swedes Church, 606 N Church St, Wilmington, DE 19801 on Wednesday, December 10, 2025 at 7.00 pm to join in sharing in a ceremony of prayers, sacred text, music and poetry. Allow yourself grace and gentleness, and place a blue ribbon of remembrance on a tree in hope that you will find comfort in knowing you are not alone and that God’s presence is for those who grieve, for those who struggle, for those who “feel blue”.
The Right Reverend Kevin S. Brown, Bishop of the Episcopal Church in Delaware, will bring words of comfort. David Simmons, Director of Music at Trinity Episcopal Parish and the Choir of Trinity Parish will lead us in music. Come early and write a note on a luminary bag in honor of a loved one.
This service of remembrance and hope – a time to move from feeling “blue” to experiencing the wonder of the Christ Child – will be followed by a time of lite refreshments and fellowship. Please feel free to invite others to come with you, as your support, or if you know that they too, find that the Christmas season hurts.
