Based on the book by Helene Hanff, this wonderful play is a dramatisation of letters between a young struggling writer in New York and an antiquarian bookstore in London. In a sense they are also love letters - they are about the love of good literature. But the play is so much richer than this, and we are drawn into the worlds of Helene and the bookshop staff as we see their relationships develop. By the end of the play we know and care very much about each of them. The action spans the years from 1949 to 1971 and is played on a split set - A New York apartment and the bookshop Marks Co, at 84 Charing Cross Road.'Charming, charming, charming ... a gently touching hands across the sea chronicle, sentimental in the best sense of the word'
