7TH ANNUAL BLACK GIRL MAGIC BALL

Conceived by Mahogany L. Browne, award winning writer, poet, organizer, and the first Poet-in-Residence at Lincoln Center. Over the past 7 years, we’ve united generations in celebrating the achievements of visionary Black women making an impact on communities worldwide and leaving an indelible mark in the realms of arts, activism, education, and beyond. All proceeds from the Ball support Urban Word & GirlTrek, youth-focused non-profit organizations empowering Black girls and women.

2024 HONOREES

Amanda Seales (a comedian and creative visionary with a Masters in African American studies from Columbia University).

Olayemi Olurin (a movement lawyer, political commentator, writer, and abolitionist thinker. Olurin educates people about systemic racism, abolition, and why we should divest from the Pr*son industrial complex).

Dr. Bettina L. Love (holds the prestigious William F. Russell Professorship at Teachers College, Columbia University, and is the acclaimed author of the New York Times bestseller Punished for Dreaming: How School Reform Harms Black Children and How We Heal).

Toi Derricotte (co-founder of Cave Canem, a home for the many voices of African American poetry).

Hope Boykin (two time “Bessie Award” winner, Hope Boykin was an original member of Complexions, danced with Philadanco, and completed 20 years with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater).

Frederick Joseph *Ally Awardee (two-time New York Times bestselling author of The Black Friend, Patriarchy Blues, Better Than We Found It (2022) and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - The Courage to Dream).
