About this Event
75th Anniversary of The Hungnam Evacuation
Join us for a full-day conference commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Hungnam Evacuation. Featuring expert speakers and personal reflections, the event offers a rare opportunity to honor the legacy of those who witnessed history firsthand.
In the bitter cold of December 1950, as UN forces and tens of thousands of North Korean civilians faced encirclement at Hungnam, a fleet of U.S.-flagged merchant ships performed one of the greatest humanitarian rescues in history. Among them, the SS Meredith Victory evacuated over 14,000 refugees in a single voyage without loss of lifeโearning its place as a symbol of courage and compassion.

The SS Meredith Victory, the ship that carried the most Korean refugees from Hungnam, was one of 150 vessels that supported the rescue of American and ROK troops and North Korean refugees. It was 450 feet long and 50 feet wide with five cargo holds, each with three decks. Based on the uncertain threat ashore the Meredith Victory was โdouble-bankedโ alongside the other vessels at the pier.
The ship faced out to sea and kept its boilers at full steam pressure during the twenty-six hours spent loading. To load, sixteen Koreans stood shoulder-to-shoulder on wooden pallets as they were lowered like cargo into the bottom holds where the fuel drums were stored. When each compartment filled, the hatch boards were put in place and the next level was loaded with humanity.
After the holds were fully packed, the overflow of people spilled onto the main deck where they stoically endured below freezing temperatures and frigid ocean spray that instantly iced surface structures.
