For the past 5 years, we have held a Brunswick Stew fundraiser and are incredibly grateful it has raised $11,033 for various local charities. This year, 100% will be going to Purple Heart Homes. If you are not familiar with Brunswick Stew, rural churches and charitable organizations have been selling it as a fundraiser for generations. There are several variations across the Southeast. Our recipe is based on the one from my grandmother’s church in Oxford, NC. It contains smoked pork, chicken, potatoes, onions, baby lima beans, corn, tomatoes, and seasoning (there is no wild game or okra in our stew).
We light the wood fires around 6 AM and gradually add the ingredients to two large cauldrons. The strew simmers and acquires a smokey flavor as it is constantly stirred with an unlacquered boat paddle. We start with 40 gallons which reduces to about 30 gallons as it thickens. This normally takes around 10 hours, but, according to tradition, it’s not ready until the paddle stands in the stew by itself. If you have not had this smokey goodness prepared over a wood fire, you are missing out on something very special.
The stew will be sold in individual pint containers for $9 each. Hot stew fresh from the fire will be available for pickup from 5PM until it is gone. Our home is located at 224 Winter Flake Drive (look for the Army truck parked out front.) Please spread the word to your friends and family. Also note, Brunswick Stew freezes exceptionally well, so you can store some for later.
Our friends that don’t eat meat can also participate. We will also have about 8 gallons of plant-based chili for sale.
