About this Event
5TO9 film club presents a special screening of Gurinder Chadha's film Bhaji on the Beach (1993), as a part of our 2024 programme.
Gurnider became famous for her portrayal of a young female British Sikh footballer in Bend It Like Beckham (2002), with a lot of care and love, capturing life of an East African Sikh family in London, which seems to be one of those first-and-last movies to exist. It wasn't the last time she tackled matters of South Asian Brits and the cultural difficulties they face, as in Blinded by the Light (2019). When her debut, Bhaji on the Beach (1993), follows a group of really different British South Asian women traveling to Blackpool together. A story of hope and revelations, that quite similarly followed and shared in some common threads in 2024 Cannes Gran Prix's winner All We Imagine As Light (2024) directed by Payal Kapadiya. Please join us to celebrate Gurinder Chadha and her work!
The screening is preceded by a small talk about the film and a discussion afterward. The number of seats is limited so make sure to reserve your spot!
Everyone is welcome.
