Women In Training, Inc. (WIT), a youth empowerment nonprofit organization that works to end period poverty, is holding its 5th Annual WIT 5K Run/Walk at the exciting Montgomery Whitewater on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 7:00 a.m. The 5K is part of our Women's History Month weekend celebration. We are raising funds to distribute #WITKITS of menstrual, dental and hygiene supplies, as well as menstrual education and leadership opportunities, to underserved girls.
Imagine a young girl missing school simply because she can't afford basic feminine hygiene products. Sadly, this is a reality for one in four American girls and young women. Women in Training, Inc. tackles this issue head-on by providing monthly donations of WITKITS—canvas bags loaded with essential menstrual, dental and hygiene items—to girls and young women. Since 2019, WIT volunteers have distributed an impressive 30,000 WITKITS, making a significant dent in alleviating period poverty.
Alongside the WIKITS, Women in Training offers educational programs about menstruation and even publishes a handy brochure, "The WIT Guide to the Menstrual Cycle." So, each WITKIT does more than just provide immediate relief; it keeps girls in school, educates them, and offers them the chance to focus on their education without interruptions. In doing so, WITKITS lay down the foundation for both personal and academic growth, serving as a true enabler of lifelong development.
Our most significant impact in five years is successfully advocating for unanimous passage of HB 50 in the Alabama legislature. This law, sponsored by Representative Rolanda Hollis, allocates $400,000 annually to the Alabama Department of Education to provide menstrual supplies to girls in Title I schools with a high percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced price lunch.
For the 5th Annual Race, we are offering two events:
1) WIT 5K (3.1 mile) Run/Walk Race, starting at 7:00 AM CST, in which participants will run and/or walk the 5K course for a timed result. For this race, we will have overall and age group awards based on time and all participants will receive a unique WIT 5K t-shirt.
2) In addition, we have added a VIRTUAL WIT 5K Run/Walk for those who want to participate but cannot make it to the race in person. Your shirt, bib and medal will be mailed to you, and you will be able to submit your results on this site.
The race is a fundraiser for WIT’s signature WITKITS Campaign to provide menstrual products and hygiene items to young, low-income people who menstruate.
Following the economic fallout from the pandemic, the number of girls and women who could not afford period products increased from one in five to one in four, causing them to miss school, class, work or similar obligations because they do not have the products they need. Many girls who struggle to afford period products resort to using paper towels, rags, socks and other items that place their health in jeopardy.
Since its founding in July 2019, WIT has distributed more than 30,000 WITKITS per year to girls and women in need across Alabama. Each registration and donation contributes to WIT's mission of ending period poverty and educating and empowering the women of tomorrow.
