At 1:20am on June 28, 1969 New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich Village in New York City. The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement outside the bar on Christopher Street, in neighboring streets and in nearby Christopher Park. The Stonewall Riots served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.
The patrons did not disperse as they had in the past, rather they grew angry. Throwing bottles and debris at the police officers. Having never dealt with pushback from the gay community police called for reinforcements, barricading themselves in to the Stonewall Inn. Reportedly the barricade was breached and Stonewall set on fire with the police inside.
By 4:00am the fire department and a riot squad were able to douse the flames and rescue those inside Stonewall, and disperse the crowd. Protests continued for 5 more days leading to a galvanizing force for the LGBTQ political activism and several gay rights organizations including; Gay Liberation Front, Human Rights Campaign, GLAAD and PFLAG.
In 2016, President Obama designated the Stonewall Inn, Christopher Park and the surrounding streets and sidewalks a national monument in recognition of the areas contribution to gay and human rights.
In honor of the momentous event we have designed a workout for our first annual ‘Stonewall’ on Sunday, June 30th.
