A Little Bronzeville History:
The Mayor of Bronzeville contest was a nationwide phenomenon that was started in Chicago by James “Jimmy” Gentry. After an unsuccessful attempt to initiate the contest in 1930 while at the Chicago Bee, it caught on in 1934 when he moved to the Chicago Defender. The first of Chicago’s Mayors of Bronzeville was James E. Knight, inaugurated on September 22, 1934. The concept spread to cities like Detroit, Milwaukee, Indianapolis, and eventually to the Twin Cities. The information here comes from the Minneapolis Spokesman, the city’s African-American newspaper since 1934.
The Mayor of Bronzeville is Andre Guichard, co-owner of Gallery Guichard and the Guichard Project, succeeding the position after radio personality, Herb Kent, with his First Lady Frances Guichard.
Andre was appointed by the Chicago Defender and assumed the position August, 2017. The mayor's platform is to help elevate the Bronzeville community through nonprofit organizations who are performing and giving back to the community. Instead of starting a new foundation, Andre feels it is necessary to support those foundations who are already making a difference in the lives of youth in Bronzeville.
The Mayor’s & First Lady platforms have raised and donated close to $10,000 in just one year: 2017 Mayor’s Ball ($2500) donated to Young Women’s Leadership Charter School
