What to Expect:

57 Blocks is an immersive and interactive performance, that brings together Free Street's two youth ensembles, and connects audiences to both of our spaces by way of a bus ride. Audiences will arrive at Pulaski Park, and be welcomed to their first day, not as “students,” but as accomplices to youth in Chicago in their mission to change the face of education as we know it. During this 2 hour “orientation,” audience members will learn about the history of education in our city, while being invited to listen to the personal stories of the youth leading them. By the end of the play, the audience will find themselves dreaming of radical possibilities for Chicago at The Storyfront. Audience members will take a bus ride between our two locations. This is part of the performance, and the show will continue while inside the bus.

Transportation:

Audience members who live closer to Back of the Yards will be offered a pick up ride at 6:30 to bring them to Pulaski Park, while audience members who live closer to Pulaski Park can take the school bus used in the production back to the northside after the show. When purchasing your tickets, make sure to select if you would like to be picked up at The Storyfront, our Back of the Yards location.

Age Restrictions and Child Co-Programming:

57 Blocks is open to audiences ages 14 & Up. If you have questions about age restrictions, or other box office questions, please contact [email protected].

On Saturday June 18th, we will provide free child co-programming for children of attendees, 13 & younger. Audiences will be able to sign up for child co-programming on this day when registering for the June 18th event. Parents will be asked to drop off their children at The Storyfront at 4346 S Ashland Ave by 1pm. From there, they can ride the bus up to Pulaski Park for the performance.

COVID-19 Policy:

Free Street Theater hosts virtual and in-person shows in compliance with guidelines provided by the CDC (Center for Disease Control), and OSHA (Occupational Health and Safety Administration). Free Street Theater is eager to welcome teens back for rehearsal, and audiences back into our spaces. Due to the contagious nature of COVID-19,an inherent risk of exposure exists in any public place where people gather. All audience members assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19. Our top priority at this time is to mitigate the health and safety risks of COVID-19 for all in person engagement. Audience members must follow all posted instructions and guidelines within our performance and rehearsal spaces.

To further mitigate the risk of COVID-19 our current policy is as follows:

*All guests affirm that you are not experiencing any symptoms ofCOVID -19. A list of the most up to date symptoms of COVID - 19 can be found at the CDC website here:https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html

*Any guests, ensemble members or staff who have experienced exposure to COVID-19 must isolate per the most CDC recent guidelines.

*All guests, ensemble members and staff must wear a mask, bring their vaccine card or proof of vaccination for entry and attempt to social distance to the best of their ability.

How we got here:

In August of 2020, after Free Street produced two separate digital youth productions (WASTED & Essential), created by our two youth ensembles (the Pulaski Park and Storyfront Ensembles), Free Street teaching artists and directors had a big question to ask, “What does this pandemic give us the opportunity to do?” No longer facing the challenges of geographic location, but wanting to build towards a big comeback show, that would acknowledge connection, we decided to merge our two ensembles to create a play which would not only investigate the issues of education, immigration and incarceration in the city, but also connect both our spaces, which are located off Ashland Avenue.

Starting in October of 2020, we began the process of 57 Blocks. The play centers around three main questions, “What pathways are set up for youth in Chicago? What pipelines do we wish to dismantle? And if we could create portals to new realities, what would be waiting there for us?” To create this play we conducted research, reading books like “Ghosts in the Schoolyard” by Eve L. Ewing and “We Do This Til’ We Free Us,” by Mariame Kaba, along with interviewing dozens of community members, and partnering with Liberation Library, to lift the work they are doing for youth currently incarcerated.

Over two years, the youth have met three to five times per week, having dialogues, trying out new scenes, learning immersive theater techniques through our production mentorship from Birch House Immersive, and even producing a digital version of the show, which premiered to audiences in May of 2021.

Helmed by directors Katrina Dion, Marilyn Carteño, and Sebastian Olayo, 57 Blocks has a cast of 9, but has worked with over 30 youth to create the scenes for this original and one-of-a-kind immersive experience being brought to Chicago audiences this spring.

Cómo llegamos a este momento?

Ewing y "We Do This Til' We Free Us" de Mariame Kaba, entrevistamos a docenas de miembros de la comunidad y nos asociamos con Liberation Library para presentar el trabajo que están haciendo para jóvenes presentemente encarcelados.
