Griffin Middle School Celebrates 50 Years!Please join us to mark the 50th Anniversary of Griffin Middle School 1972-2022.

This fall marks a major milestone for Griffin Middle School, as it was September of 1972 that the doors
opened to students for the first time. Named for former Cobb County Schools Superintendent Jasper M.
Griffin, that first year the school housed 971 students, and 68 staff members in a 110,000 SF building.
The original design of the school was an open space style, with four teachers operating in an open
classroom “pod”. Modifications and additions have been made to the building over the last 50 years, but
the basic footprint of the pods are still intact. To celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the school, the
administration will be holding a celebration on Sunday, September 18, from 3:00 pm – 5:00pm. Events
will include remarks by former and current staff, and tours of the building, culminating in refreshments
prepared by the Family and Consumer Science students in the cafeteria. Throughout the building there
will be bulletin boards highlighting “Griffin through the Years” as well as displays of yearly scrapbooks,
slideshows and photographs from over the years, and other artifacts and memorabilia. The celebration
won’t be only about the alumni, though. The current 1,050 students and 100 staff members will also
spend the week prior gearing up for the celebration with multiple Spirit Week activities. There will be
Decade Dress Days, daily trivia featuring facts about Griffin and the decades of 1972-2022, and
classroom research about how things have changed over the last 50 years. During the celebration itself,
there will be select students from the band, orchestra, and chorus performing and displays of artwork.
The administration, PTSA, and Griffin Foundation are hopeful that many alumni will take a stroll down
memory lane and help celebrate 50 years of Griffin Middle School!
