The Nunnery, formerly called The Community of the Holy Name, is a large convent that's Grade II listed and built in 1879. At the peak of its hey day, this nunnery housed about 250 nuns. In the 1960s the intake of novices declined significantly, and by the mid 1980s, the Community was struggling financially, leaving them no choice but to sell off land for housing and later industrial development. The Nunnery was sold to a property developer in 1989, leaving the few remaining number of nuns to move into a smaller convent in Derby, where they still remain today.
The Nunnery is a huge site consisting of a few historic buildings that have stood the test of time, including the beautiful Church building where masses, congregations and prayer gatherings took place, and two large houses where the nuns lived in and gathered for their meals throughout the day. Today, The Nunnery stands in the shadow of its former self, with its derelict rooms, creepy corridors, dark cloister and terrifying basements that send shivers down your spine.
Renowned for its intriguing paranormal investigations and ghostly goings on, many locals and investigators have experienced apparitions of both nuns and priests, heard disembodied moans and voices, phantom footsteps that wander the houses, a prominent nun who roams the cloister, poltergeist activity and even the echoes of monks chanting in the Chapel, along with residual sounds of organ music, despite the organ no longer being there 👀
