After a long pause since 2019, The English Club of the Laboratorians is back, stronger than ever, with the highly anticipated 4th Laboratorians' National English Carnival 2024! This year's carnival, holding from November 7 to 9, promises to be an exciting blend of intellectual rigor and creative expression, offering something for everyone who values the power of language.
This carnival isn’t just about mastering English; it’s about embracing communication in all its forms. Whether you're sharpening your skills in the English Olympiad, solving challenging Crosswords, or showcasing your expertise in the Pokédex Quiz, there’s plenty to engage both your mind and competitive spirit. With a range of events like Situational Writing, Connecting Incidents, and the always exciting Pop Culture Quiz, plus group activities like the Mega Quiz, we’ve worked hard to make this year’s fest bigger, better, and more engaging than ever.
While this carnival will be filled with friendly competition, it’s also a celebration of knowledge, skill, and community. So, whether you're looking to improve, compete, or just enjoy the experience, this event will offer a memorable, enriching atmosphere for all participants.

EVENT INSIGHTS:
FREE EVENTS (SOLO):

1. English Olympiad (P, J, S, I)
Participants will tackle a variety of questions covering English literature, grammar, and some general knowledge related to the English language. The event will last for 30 minutes.
2. Grammar Nazi (J, S)
Participants will receive three passages containing sentences that appear correct but have grammatical errors. The question format will focus on identifying these mistakes. Extra points will be awarded for providing hints and explanations of the rules related to the errors. Participants must underline the mistakes and rewrite the passages correctly.
3. Situational Writing ( S,I )
In this event, you will receive a scenario along with three or more unfamiliar characters. Participants will need to compose a minimum of thirty exchanges among those characters based on the situation. You will have 20 minutes to complete the conversation.
4. Extempore Speech (P, J ,S, I)
In this event, participants will be required to give a speech on a specific topic that will be announced on the spot. Each participant will have 3 minutes to prepare and then 3 minutes to deliver their speech.
5. Intensive Reading (J, S)
This event is a reading assessment. Participants will receive an unseen passage along with multiple-choice questions related to it. They must read the passage thoroughly and answer the questions accordingly.
6. Master Speller (P, J, S, I)
This is a traditional spelling competition consisting of two rounds. The first round will be written, while the second round will take place on stage. The top 10 participants from the first round will advance to the final.
7. Crosswords (J, S)
Crosswords are word puzzles typically presented in a grid format, where players fill in words based on clues given for each word. The words intersect at certain letters, which are shared between horizontal and vertical entries. Each clue corresponds to a specific word, and solvers must use their knowledge of vocabulary, general knowledge, and wordplay to complete the puzzle. They can be found in newspapers, puzzle books, and online. This event will last for 20 minutes.
8. Instant Story Writing (P, J)
Participants will take part individually and receive a scenario to inspire their tales. The twist? Your stories should be satirical or have a bittersweet outcome, steering away from generic moral lessons.
1. The Litman (S, I)
Two passages will be provided in the question paper, accompanied by multiple-choice questions related to them. Participants must read the passages thoroughly and answer the questions.
They will have 45 minutes to complete this round.

2. Pokedex Quiz (ALL)
Join us for the Pokédex Quiz, a fun Pokémon-themed adventure that takes you through the Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn regions. You'll get to answer all sorts of questions about Pokémon types, abilities, evolutions, and legendary lore from these iconic areas. One of the coolest parts?
The "WHO'S THAT POKÉMON?" segment, where you'll guess the name of a Pokémon just from its silhouette. It's all happening in a quick 25-minute quiz that's perfect for everyone, whether you're a casual fan or a seasoned Trainer. Come test your knowledge and have a blast!

3. Creative Dubbing (P+J+S)
Join us for the Creative Dubbing event!
Participants will watch clips from TV shows and movies on a big screen and translate them according to fun guidelines. The goal is to be entertaining and capture the essence of the original clip-accuracy isn't required!

[Intermediate Level (11,12 & HSC-2024) cannot participate]
PAID EVENTS (SOLO):
1. Digital Art (ALL)
Digital art is the fusion of imagination and technology, where creativity knows no bounds.
Whether you're crafting surreal worlds or detailed portraits, every brushstroke on your screen brings visions to life. Step into the world of pixels, gradients, and vectors-your masterpiece awaits.
Rules to Remember:
The submission must be SFW.
Accepted formats: JPEG or PNG.
Use RGB color mode.
Selected works will be printed for exhibition.
Selected artists will need to pay a small fee for the exhibition.
Topic is open—let your imagination run wild!
• REGISTRATION FEE: 200 BDT for each photo

2. Photography Exhibition (ALL)
Photography is the art of freezing time, where every snapshot tells a story. With each click, you have the power to immortalize emotions, landscapes, and fleeting moments. Frame your perspective and share the world as you see it.
Rules to Remember:

• Mobile Photography
• Camera/DSLR
Submission Guidelines:
• All participants must own the photos they submit.
• The minimum photo size must be 3000 pixels on the longer side.
• Each participant can submit a maximum of 3 photos.
• Photos can be either color or black and white.
• No digital manipulation is allowed. Only light editing, such as adjusting exposure or contrast, is permitted.

Team Events:

1. Mega Quiz (All)
If you’re into trivia and love a good challenge, this one’s for you. Grab up to 4 friends and form a team to test your knowledge across all sorts of topics—Literature, History, Science, Mythology, Sports, TV & Movies, and more. It’s a one-round, written quiz that’s packed with questions to keep you on your toes.
Rules and Regulation:
• Each quiz team can have a maximum of 5 members.
• There are no restrictions on team member selection.
• Online registration is not available.
• REGISTRATION FEE: 500 Taka
(This event is open to everyone, from school to university students.)
2. Pop Culture Quiz (J, S)
Whether you’re obsessed with the latest movies, binge-watching TV shows, or keeping up with the hottest music and games, this quiz is made for you. 30 minutes of non-stop fun, packed with everything. From iconic moments to trending topics. If you’re the one who always knows what’s going on in the world of pop culture, this is your time to shine.
REGISTRATION FEE- 200 BDT/per Team (Teams of 2).

3. Team Quiz (S, I)
English Club of the Laboratorians is inviting all quizzers to take part in the Team Quiz at the upcoming English Carnival. Whether you're competing with friends from the same institution or teaming up with others, this event is all about quick thinking, collaboration, and a bit of strategy.
Rules and Regulations:
• Teams must consist of 2-3 members from the same or different institutions.
• The competition includes two segments: a primary round and a buzzer round. The top six teams from the primary round will advance to the finals.
• REGISTRATION FEE: 200 Taka

4. Wall Magazine (All)
Wall magazines blend art and ideas, capturing attention with visual storytelling. From intellectuals to casual onlookers, a well-crafted wall magazine sparks curiosity and creates awareness. Join one of the most anticipated events of the National English Carnival, where teams of three from the same institution will bring their creative visions to life.
Key Guidelines:
Size: Minimum (3 feet X 2 feet), Maximum (6 feet X 4 feet).
Base: Cork sheet.
Content must adhere to community guidelines—avoid any offensive material.
No vulgarity, swearing, or indecent artwork allowed.
Plagiarism is strictly prohibited.
Participants must retrieve their wall magazines post-event.
No edits allowed after submission.

*Famous Characters in English Literature*
Explore iconic characters like Sherlock Holmes, Harry Potter, or Oliver Twist, and how they have influenced readers over time.
*The World of Fantasy in English Literature*
Discover how fantasy worlds in English literature, like those in The Chronicles of Narnia or The Hobbit, captivate readers with their imaginative settings and magical adventures.
*Adventures in Classic English Novels*
Highlight famous adventure stories in English literature, such as Treasure Island or The Jungle Book, and the exciting worlds they created.
*The Power of Poetry in English Literature*
Discuss the impact of famous English poets like William Wordsworth, John Keats, or Emily Dickinson, and how their poems express deep emotions.
*The Evolution of the English Novel*
Explore how novels have changed from the works of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens to more modern writers, and how they reflect society.
*The Role of Women in English Literature*
Examine how female authors like Virginia Woolf, the Brontë sisters, or Mary Shelley shaped English literature and gave voice to women’s experiences.
It’s a team-based event, so each team will consist maximum 4 members and minimum 2 members.
Fees:
• Wall Magazine: 300 BDT registration fee for each team

5. Scrap Book (All)
Join us for a creative journey in our Scrapbooking Challenge. Each scrapbook should showcase unique stories through printed materials, artwork, and photographs.
Topics: Open
Rules and Regulations:
• Plagiarism is not allowed and will lead to immediate disqualification.
• Scrapbooks that have won previous competitions cannot be submitted.
• Participants must retrieve their scrapbooks at the end of the event.
• REGISTRATION FEE: 300 taka
