This year’s program opens with Jay Bocook’s arrangement of the Finale from Brahm’s Symphony No. 1. The spiritual Amazing Grace, arranged by Frank Ticheli, reflects the powerful simplicity of the words and melody of the original composition. The program also includes O Magnum Mysterium, a stunning adaptation for symphonic winds by H. Robert Reynolds and Minor Alterations 2: Carols from the Dark Side by David Lovrien in the first half. After intermission, Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, arranged by A. Meyns is featured. The congregation is invited to sing along with Gustav Holst’s hymn In the Bleak Midwinter before an arrangement by Robert W. Smith of this hymn is performed. The final selection is December Dance by Andrew Boysen Jr. The band featured his Snowflakes Dancing in last year’s Cathedral Concert.
In keeping with long-standing tradition, the concert will close with the band singing John Rutter’s The Lord Bless You and Keep You, with an accompaniment for small wind ensemble by local music educator and composer, Dr. David Thompson.
There is no admission charge for the concert. A free-will offering will be received.
