In September 1985, a nerdy high school junior walked into the cafetorium at Fullerton Elementary School for his first Seido Karate class. 40 years later he's got a black belt with six hash marks on it, has trained and taught in Japan, judged tournaments in Australia and New Zealand, had a living legend in the martial arts sing him "Happy Birthday", and been a teacher to others. Worth celebrating a little, I think.September 2025 marks the 40th anniverary of the start of my Seido Karate training! To celebrate, we're holding a special class and social event on Friday, September 26 at 6:30 at the Catonsville Dojo, 6159-B Edmondson Avenue.
All our students, fellow students, and former students, and other martial arts friends are invited! We've love to use this opportunity to catch up with former students, whether from our days at the Westchester Community Center, the Catonsville Y, or our time at Revolve.
Special guest Sensei Mike Gurklis, with whom I started training back in 1985, will be visiting. We'll have a class with basics, some bag work, and light sparring for appropriate people. We then plan to adjourn to a local tavern for some social time.
If you'd like to drop by for our anniversary class, we always love absolute beginners -- or old friends dropping by.
