400-700 nanometers is the wavelength of light visible to the human eye—a mere fraction of the vast electromagnetic spectrum. Other frequencies, invisible yet familiar to us, include X-rays, ultraviolet rays, microwaves, and radio waves. This highlights that human perception is only a tiny fragment of the infinite universe, reminding us of our inherent limitations and imperfections—not just in perception but also in personality and identity. Moreover, individuality and existence are not fixed entities; rather, they are infinitely fluid and ever-changing. Aphisit Sidsunthia’s art directly engages with this sense of excess, imperfection, and instability.By minimizing the use of color, Aphisit distances himself from traditional color theory. He acknowledges that some colors do not exist on the spectrum derived from white light and embraces his own color blindness in his work. Moreover, the absence of colors intensifies the function of other visual elements, offering freedom for imagination and creating space for transformation or ‘becoming’ in ontological sense. Black and white imagery represents a world rarely seen in daily life, akin to the dark, incomprehensible vastness of the universe. The void-like shapes in his work, beyond being empty spaces, can become other forms or overlapping layers—weights and dimensions reconstructed within the flat constraints of painting.
In a world dominated by visual culture that prioritizes color and pixel-level clarity, perception and interpretation happen rapidly, often at a subconscious level.
However, Aphisit chooses to slow this process, emphasizing ambiguity and imperfection in his work—a hallmark of postmodern aesthetics. His art invites us to reflect on what we see, what we believe to be true, and our desire to fill human deficiencies or achieve an unattainable sense of perfection.
