Join Project for Empty Space on Saturday, April 5th, from 12 PM to 4 PM at 800 Broad St., Newark, NJ, for Body Freedom Activity Day, featuring interactive workshops led by Body Freedom artists Christen Clifford and Damien Davis. The event begins with a conversation between the artists about their participation and hands-on projects, setting the stage for an afternoon of creativity and activism.
Christen Clifford: SIGNAL CELEBRATION
In this sign-making workshop for bodily autonomy, participants of all ages will use paint, markers, and cardboard to create impactful signs that will become part of the BODY FREEDOM FOR EVERY(BODY) exhibition. This interactive session encourages reflection on freedom, choice, and the power of collective expression.
Zines for Every(body): A Hands-On History of Body Freedom
This open-format, drop-in workshop invites participants to explore personal and collective narratives around bodily autonomy, reproductive justice, queer and trans liberation, and self-representation. Using collage, writing, and visual storytelling, attendees will create zines as tools for activism and visibility, challenging systems that restrict and politicize body autonomy.

Christen Clifford is a multi-disciplinary feminist artist whose work has been seen in The New Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, The Newark Museum of Art, The Lyman Allyn Museum, Grace Exhibition Space, CARA, The Momentary, LACE, The Bureau of General Services Queer Division, The Reproductive Health Access Project, and Project for Empty Space. She is working on her first film, an autobiographical experimental documentary about her experiences with uterine, ovarian, and breast cancers. She has co-curated Experiments and Disorders at Dixon Place with Tom Cole since 2009, and she teaches at The New School. Learn more about Christen at www.christenclifford.info.
Damien Davis is a Newark-based artist, born in Crowley, Louisiana, and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. His practice involves constructing a unique visual language that engages with the processes of cultural representation and meaning-making. By recontextualizing symbols across different cultures, Davis’s work challenges fixed notions of identity and history, inviting viewers to decode and reinterpret the messages within his art.
Mr. Davis is currently an Adjunct Professor of Sculpture at Purchase College (SUNY). He curated a series of exhibitions over a two-year span at the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art and Storytelling.
