Two local women’s groups, the Oil City – Franklin Zonta Club and the Oil City YWCA will celebrate International Women’s Day with a special event on Saturday, March 8th from 1 -3 p.m. at the Oil City YWCA located at 109 Central Avenue in Oil City. Registration will begin at 12:45. Registration is free!
The celebration is the 3rd annual International Women’s Day event held locally. Previous years it was known as “Pack the Plaza” and was held in the Central Avenue Plaza in Oil City.
The free event is geared towards women of all ages, anyone passionate about celebrating and empowering women is welcome and encouraged to attend.
The keynote address ‘Don’t be a lady, be a legend’ will be given by Oil City resident Laura R. Wilbur. Laura and her husband John moved to Oil City in September 2023 after spending time in many locations around the world. She is a Litigation Strategist, Certified Mediator, and Lecturer with twenty-five years of legal experience. Being a strong woman herself, Laura is an advocate for empowering women. ‘Don’t be a lady, be a legend’ is a quote by Stevie Nicks, a musician from the band Fleetwood Mac. Her quote, note the Zonta Club and the YWCA, is a reminder to be true to yourself and to forget the rest; to embrace your uniqueness and follow your dreams.
Participants will be able to choose to attend 2 of the 4 break-out discussions planned:
Holistic Well-Being - Lead by Jessica Hoffman Owner, Young at Heart Yoga
Holistic wellness refers to an approach to health and well-being that considers the whole person, encompassing all aspects of your life. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual health.
Physical / Nutritional Well-Being – Lead by Jane Horos, YWCA Health and Fitness Director
Physical/nutritional well-being refers to a state of optimal health achieved by maintaining a balanced diet with proper nutrition and engaging in regular physical activity, ensuring your body functions at its best through healthy eating habits and exercise routines; essentially, taking care of your body through what you eat and how you move it.
Financial Well-Being – Lead by Rebekah Deal, Zonta President
Financial well-being is a state of feeling secure and in control of your finances. It’s also about being able to meet your current and future financial needs and having the freedom to enjoy life.
Mental Well-Being – Lead by Kay Gordon Brewster, Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Mental wellbeing is a combination of how we feel, how we function, and our knowledge that we are separate from our problems. Mental health encompasses our emotional, psychological, behavioral, and social wellbeing. Mental health is something that everyone has and needs to take care of, just like our physical health.
International Women’s Day is a global holiday celebrated annually on March 8 as a focal point in the women’s rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.
This year’s theme for International Women’s Day is Accelerate Action. #AccelerateAction
Zonta Advocacy Committee Chair Deb Lutz said, ‘We encourage and welcome everyone to come to the event and be inspired!’
