panel presentation features three distinguished educator-clinicians who will

share powerful case examples from their work, demonstrating how they guide

groups from fear, rage, grief, and pain toward connection, healing, and repair.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS:


  • Dr. Nina E. Cerfolio, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and Assistant Clinical Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, with over 30 years of experience specializing in trauma, mass shootings, terrorism, anxiety, and depression. Combining traditional psychiatric training with over a decade of spiritual practice in mindfulness and meditation, she offers a holistic, collaborative approach to care, tailoring treatment to each patient’s unique needs. An internationally recognized expert, Dr. Cerfolio frequently shares insights through media appearances, speaking engagements, and her acclaimed book, Psychoanalytic and Spiritual Perspectives on Terrorism, which explores the roots of terrorism and paths to healing. Dedicated to relieving emotional suffering, she empowers patients to transcend life’s challenges and achieve emotional wellness.


  • Dr. Gerard Fromm, Ph.D., ABPP, is a psychoanalyst and Distinguished Faculty at the Erikson Institute of the Austen Riggs Center, where he spent much of his career as a psychotherapist and program leader. He directed the Therapeutic Community Program, fostering collaboration between patients and staff, and served as the first Evelyn Stefansson Nef Director of the Erikson Institute, promoting interdisciplinary dialogue and founding the International Dialogue Initiative, where he is now president. Dr. Fromm has held academic roles at Yale and Harvard and has published extensively.


  • Dr. Billie Pivnick, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist in Brooklyn, NY, specializing in treating children and families confronting difficulties with traumatic loss, including those that result from adoption and mass catastrophes. She is faculty and supervisor in the William Alanson White Institute Child/Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program, the New Directions Program in Psychoanalytic Writing, Columbia University Teachers College Doctoral Clinical Psychology Program, and is former head of the Graduate Dance Therapy Program at Pratt Institute. Dr. Pivnck co-hosts the podcast Couched. Co-chair of APA Division 39’s Humanities and Psychoanalysis Committee and co-founder of The Community Collaboratory, Dr. Pivnick also serves as Consulting Psychologist to Thinc Design, collaborating on exhibitions like the National September 11 Memorial Museum. An award-winning author and editor, she has published extensively on psychoanalysis, trauma, and culture.
