I have offered this event about 10 times and it's be awesome every time
It has been an awesome whale sighting season so far in Hermanus for 2023, with the whales in abundance and have been quite active - Last year when we did this group activity in October at the same time and we saw lots whales up close, a definite treat for the senses and one for the Bucket List for sure.
Kayaking with the Whales of Hermanus is an awesome experience bringing you very close to these gentle giants of the ocean, while paddling a kayak in Walker Ba. These Kayaks are quite stable and no previous experience is needed
We will meet after the Kayak trip for coffee and stretch our legs with a short relaxing walk to enjoy the costal views along one of the coastal paths, as we take in some of the sights of the whales with some land based whale watching. This makes for a fuller day out experience. The land based whale watching offers a different perspective and is certainly an annual event not to be missed. We will meet for lunch afterwards in the area. For those that are on the second group, you can meet up with us for lunch afterwards as a group, to share the experiences.

ABOUT THE ADVENTURE ON OFFER
#########################
After a thorough briefing on kayaking techniques and safety we paddle from the historical Old Harbour and do a round trip, the direction dependant on winds, swells and paddling abilities. A knowledgeable guide shall open up the wonders of our ocean to you, as we explore the beautiful natural surroundings. Walker Bay Adventures are very aware of our environment and are proud of the fact that we are an ecologically friendly operator that strives to have as little impact on the environment in which we operate our tours as possible. With minimal noise pollution and no environmental pollution we also do regular clean ups of any rubbish found in the Bay.
They use Perception Tribe sea kayaks that are manufactured in the UK and are sit on top self-bailing, plastic sea kayaks. In short this means that anyone, weather you have kayaked before or not, can hop on and stay on. The guides are qualified in marine guiding and first aid at sea, but more importantly they love this job and hold great knowledge of the ocean.
To be respectful of the whales in a Marine Reserve and by law we are not allowed to come within 300m of a whale. If they decide to come close to the kayaks we must move away from them.

TYPES OF WHALES THAT CAN BE SEEN IN SEPT IN HERMANUS
#########################
Southern Right whale
This whale is distinguished by callosities (calluses) on its head, a broad back without a dorsal fin and a long, arching mouth that begins above the eye. These mammals often swim close to the shore: if the looming shadow of a big fish at your hotel window leaves you cowering under the duvet, it’s probably real. Interesting fact: an adult female can weigh up to 80 tonnes. Male Southern Right Whales have, what are arguably, the largest testicles in the animal kingdom: each weighing about 500kg. Best time to spot them: July – November.
Humpback whale
The humpback has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and a knobby head. Curious about their environment, they will approach whale watching boats closely, often sunbathing near the boat for a while. They pass through Hermanus on their way to a scuba diving holiday in St Lucia.
Interesting fact: Male Humpback whales produce complex songs, sometimes lasting 10 to 20 minutes long. These songs are often repeated for hours at a time, and while scientists have not yet figured out the tune’s porpoise (ahem, purpose) some believe it is related to mating rituals.
Best time to spot them: May – December.
If you haven't yet seen the marvel of this mega creature, check out this video performance.
Bryde’s whales are named after the Norwegian consul to South Africa, John Bryde, who helped set up the first whaling station in Durban. They are medium-sized, dark grey in colour with a white underbelly.
Interesting fact: Bryde’s Whales can reach depths of up to 300m while diving and can stay submerged up to a maximum of 20 minutes!
Best time to spot them: all year round.
You can also spot: Orcas, although sightings are occasional.

NEW TERMS OF BOOKING
#########################
For these group events payments are made in advance for Accommodation or Adventure Activities or Permits, hence no refunds are on offer. If you are not able to join, a refund will not be offered unless the event is full and the last person refills your place. Once I have received their payment, I will refund you. I do however make every effort to regularly re-advertise cancelled spaces, via my various listings, that includes Facebook, Meetup and my email listing, in an attempt to fill up the event and hopefully refund you.
If you can't make it for one of the adventures it is recommended that you find a replacement yourself, as I cannot guarantee that a replacement will be found. For the weekends away, any person who takes your place must have done one of the regular walks before the weekend away as per the usual qualifying requirements below.
With cancellations less than 7 days prior to our departure day, NO REFUNDS are on offer and your spot will NOT be re-advertised as it is too short notice. People tend to make other plans and bookings in the last week are very hard to refill unless I have a waiting list.
I also reserve the right to re-schedule or cancel a tour should the minimum number of people not be attained or if the booking is cancelled by the outsourced operator or due to the weather not being suitable; in this case a full refund will be offered.
For more info or directions, contact Iain Macdonald on Tel: 072 3272840 or 021 4628004 or [email protected] - Please note that bookings will be on a first-come-first-served basis with payment, so book early to avoid disappointment.

How well we have lived
How well we have loved
How well we have learned to let go”

WHAT TO BRING & FAQ
#########################
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
@@@ - Can I really do this, I've never paddled before?
Sure you can. 99% of our customers have not been in a kayak before.
@@@ How fit do I have to be?
Not very. If you can do an hours walk then you can do this. It's only when it's very windy that the trip becomes quite strenuous. And if it's very windy we don't go out.
@@@ I'm nearly sixty? Can I do it?
Like I said, if you can do an hours walk then you can do it. We've had many older customers and as long as you feel good you'll be fine.
@@@ Is there a weight limit?
Over 110kg is probably pushing it.
@@@ What about kids?
Generally from 10 years up kids are fine, especially if they are with an adult in the boat. Younger than that they need a strong adult with them because the adult does pretty much all the work. In whale season however we up the age to 12 as you need to be a little more alert in your boat.
@@@ Will I fall off?
Almost certainly not because our kayaks are extremely stable. About two people a year on average fall in and that's usually because they are messing about. Anyway, it's also very easy to get back on.
@@@ What kind of boats are they?
We use very stable sit-on-top, self-bailing kayaks. We find people who have never paddled before become immediately comfortable because they don't feel constricted as they would in a sit-inside type of kayak and also feel that should they fall off it would be easy to get back on. We have five singles and five doubles so you can paddle with your partner if you wish.
@@@ What must I bring?
Wear shorts and a T shirt. A hat and sun cream and a jacket for those cooler days.
You can go barefoot or with sandals it is up to you … your feet shall get wet! Also bring a towel and a change of clothes for afterwards.
@@@ When is the best time of year?
You probably think summer only, right? You are dead wrong - all year round is best. Summer of course has warm sun and warm water but it also brings many windy days. Winter on the other hand is cooler and has many completely calm, warm, beautiful days. The best time is in fact whenever you can go. At any time of year it is an experience to enjoy!
------------------------------------------------------------------------
==> OTHER IMPORTANT INFO TO NOTE
Excessive wind and swell conditions will result in cancellation of the sea kayak trip. We reserve the right to cancel the trip at any given time and shall not be held responsible. We try to avoid this from happening by departing to sea in the mornings when conditions are more favourable. These times change throughout the year and can be confirmed on booking.
