What Is Encaustic?
Encaustic comes from the Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in.” This ancient technique uses heat to melt 100% pure beeswax and damar resin (tree sap).
Notably, the Fayum Mummy Portraits from the 1st Century A.D. showcased realistic details and have remained vibrant due to encaustic's durability. Beeswax is moisture-resistant, preventing deterioration, yellowing, or darkening.
Encaustic can be used alone for its transparency or combined with pigments. Layers of the medium are melted and applied, then reheated to fuse them together.
Beginners welcome!
