The 9 Bridges run & walk is on the last Sunday before Christmas. For newbies, this is a wonderfully social outing - a run (or walk) not a race ... free... not organised. We start 5:30am Sharp outside the BCC Library at the top of the mall on George St. We then cross as few or many of the bridges of Brisbane as you like during the morning. We finish at South Bank near the pools and Riverside Cafe & Bar.
The courses should see 5km walkers and 10km runners finish about the same time. Later on any 10km walkers would finish around the same time as 20km runners. All of us should be done by 8:30am.
- There's no timing, no entries needed, no bib or organisation. It's not a race, it's not affiliated with anyone, it's just a social run or walk for anyone who shows up. Find your own toilets or water along the course. You do you, right.
- There will be a group photo at the stairs at the far end of the Kangaroo Point bridge near where it meets the Storey Bridge. We'd love to get as many people as we can in the photo.
- We finish near the pools at Southbank. There is a coffee shop really close (Riverside Cafe & Bar, opens 7am). The Southbank pool is perfect for cooling off later.
- Walkers turn right at the end of the mall to go the Kangaroo point bridge while runners continue straight to the Storey bridge. This should get us to the far end of Kangaroo Point bridge at the same time for a photo together. It’ll be social pace with a few regroup points.
TOP TIP: If you get into the Southbank Parklands carpark when it opens at 5am, you can walk to the start at 5:30am. It's only $2 if you're out by 9am at the end of the run.
Traditionalists. You can make up 7 Bridges (10.3km) by crossing the Storey Bridge, new Kangaroo Point Bridge, Goodwill Bridge, Neville Bonner Bridge, Victoria Bridge, Karilpa Bridge and William Jolly Bridge and into South Bank will give you 10.3kms.
Shorter run or walk? 3 Bridges makes for a 5.5km walk or run, joining us for the photo, and walkers finishing around the same time as the 10k runners.
- Turn right at the end of Queen St and down Edward st.
- Take in the new Kangaroo Point Bridge (meet us for the photo at the stairs to the side of Kangaroo Point bridge).
- Continue along the base of the Kangaroo point cliffs
- Stroll across the Goodwill Bridge, Neville Bonner bridge
- Get back to coffee at Southbank around the time the coffee shops are open and 10km runners are soon arriving.
Long run? 9 Bridges takes all of the 7 bridge course but you also get the Go Between Bridge and then the long, hot, hilly haul along Coro Drive, the St Lucia Hills, and then the Schonell Bridge at St Lucia Qld Uni. This is just under 20km. It's also hot.
