4/13 - THREE HOURS OF EATING, DRINKING, LEARNING CHESS, WINNING PRIZES, AND HAVING FUN. SPECIAL GUEST GM VLADIMIR GEORGIEV
On 4/13 we are going to organize the biggest chess event at the Saint Petersburg Chess Club. Thanks to our Sponsors and Donators for the 5th time, we are going to give more than we collect from entry fees. We started with 3 Jeopardies, which were free for the members of the club, and we gave prizes of $400 for each Jeopardy. At the 3/8 tournament, we gave a record prize of $1400 for the winners and that was $500 more than we collected from entry fees.
Here are the details for the event on 4/13:
Three chess coaches, Joseph Lazarus, Timotey Gospodinov and GM Vladimir Georgiev, will have a chess lesson for 1 hour each. During the lessons, we will have extra prizes for the most active students. We will have lessons for all levels. We will provide free food and drinks for all students. After the three lessons are over, the audience will vote as to who gave the best lecture, and that lecturer will get an additional $100. We will have raffles with at least 5 winners, with the biggest prize being $100 (or more).
Students can play chess games each other or with coaches after the lessons and the raffles are done!

WHAT IS THE QUAD CHESS TOURNAMENT? After all the players have entered, they’re ordered from highest rating to lowest. Unrated players are placed at the low end. The top four players are placed into their own section (a “quad”), then the next four highest in another section, and so on down the list. The players in each quad play a round robin, one game against each of the players in their section, for a total of three games each. If there is not an even multiple of four players, the lowest section (usually) will have the few extra players and play a three round Swiss tournament rather than a round robin. The quad format is popular in one day events, and results in players of the most similar playing strengths being paired together for all three rounds. A Quad Tournament consists of the top four ranked players (#s 1-4) on the Chess Ladder playing each other, then the second top four ranked players (#s 5-8) playing each other, then the third top four ranked players (#s 9-12) playing each other, and so forth. Each group of four chess players is called a Quad.If two family members are at the same Quad,I can move one of them to another Quad.
ADVANTAGES OF QUAD TOURNAMENTS: The advantage of Quad Tournaments, and why players enjoy them so much, is that players of the same strength and experience are able to compete against each other. In addition, the less experienced players are able to win the same "First Place" prizes as their more experienced, stronger counterparts in Quad I and II. You have opportunity your rating to go up faster!!!
