We can't wait to see you and share our love and passion for Puerto Rico! A new season to celebrate and uplift each other sharing in the arts and culture!
Learn Afro-Puerto Rican drum and dance, beats and moves with Segunda Quimbamba! We've been teaching the rich cultural folkloric music known as la Bomba and la Plena for over 25 years in Jersey City. Fun, energetic and engaging! This program culminates with Parrandas with Segunda Quimbamba on Dec18.
Classes at the Nimbus Arts Center in Downtown Jersey City are offered in-person. Open enrollment for students to register is through October 23.

Dance classes begin with a warm up then the learning of Bomba rhythms, steps and choreography: Sica, Yuba, Cuembe, Holandes and Seis Corrido. We also teach the dance steps to Plena. In addition, you will learn about singing and chorus, call-and-response methods in the Spanish language and the beloved traditions of Parrandas,(mobile holiday party similar to caroling serenading house to house).
Students are introduced to Bomba and Plena drums - all major and minor percussion elements.
We offer beginners and advanced learning to students. Families and returning students discounts available. Adults and Children. Family friendly.
Opportunity to attend biweekly midweek Zoom meetings for additional practice, discussions of cultural history, the instruments, the rhythms, the diaspora or whatever is on YOUR mind, community building together in a continuing shared learning space.

Dance I Intro Beginner is at 2:00- 3:00 PM
Dance II Advance Level One is at 2:50 - 3:50 PM
Note that the classes I & II overlap for 10 minutes for students to learn Plena dance together.
Advance Level One Minimum experience/classes at least 1-2 sessions with Segunda Quimbamba for pre req admission into this dance class. SQFC Team will help students asses proper class placement assuring the best learning experience.

Segunda Quimbamba is excited to share that our friends at Nimbus Dance Works Company have partnered with Segunda Quimbamba Folkloric Center through a Resident Partnership at the Nimbus Arts Center at the Lively. We're working with Nimbus to help extend community outreach and impact.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Trains: Take PATH to Grove Street STOP, then a short walk east towards the water on Columbus turning left onto Warren Street, venue at 329 Warren Street. Or Exchange Place STOP walk west on Columbus away from the water to Warren street turn right for venue.
Car: Limited street or paid parking available in the area of Downtown Jersey City.
What can I bring into the studio?
For dance, dress comfortably with soft shoes/sneakers; a limited number of dance skirts and drums are available in class. If you own a dance skirt or drum please bring it with you. Bring your own water, personal hand sanitizer and mask.

To keep our staff, artists, students, and patrons healthy, mask protocol will be given on day of event notice will be at the door upon entering event that will reflect the covid alerts of the city neighborhood and facility at which time everyone must wear a mask over their nose and mouth while in the facility.

Nimbus has implemented the following cleaning schedule:
- Frequent cleaning will be done on high touch areas
- Daily cleaning of all bathrooms and full facility
- Deep cleaning every other day of entire facility
