The Dugout Bar in Mahtomedi is holding our 2nd Annual “Dugout 500 Pinewood Derby Race”, in conjunctionwith the Daytona 500 on Sunday, February 16th. Weigh in and car inspection starts at 11:00am, with the
“Dugout 500” starting at 12:00 pm, followed by the Daytona “500”, starting at 1:30 pm.
The Dugout “500” is open to anyone that wants to participate in a Pinewood Derby race, that serves alcohol! For this year’s event, we added an “OPEN” class, in addition to the
“STOCK” class that we ran last year. The stock class is $20 and we provide you with a prebuilt Pinewood Derby car, a free beverage (domestic tap/bottle, rail drink, or N/A drink)
and you are eligible for the winner’s purse for the top 3 fasted cars in the class! If you want to give the “Open Class” a try, you purchase, build and bring your own Pinewood derby
car that meets the event rules for the “OPEN” class. The “OPEN” class is $20 and it gets you a prebuilt Pinewood car, a free beverage (domestic tap/bottle, rail drink, or N/A drink)
and you are eligible for the winner’s purse for the top 3 positions”. Every car will compete in four races (one on each of the four lanes of the track) and the top three fastest cars in
each class will be deemed the winners. The winner’s purses are based on the number of cars in each class and will be determined the day of the event.

For those of you who own an actual race car, we will once again be randomly drawing at least three race car sponsorships valued at $500 each.
Pinewood Derby Rules
Stock Class:
If you want to participate in the STOCK CLASS, the entry fee is $20.00, which includes a pre-assembled kit car provided by the Dugout. ALL cars in this class are identical and the only thing you need to do is add your graphics/design to the car. First come, first serve for picking the car you want!
Open Class:
If you want to participate in the OPEN CLASS, the entry fee is $20.00 and you purchase and build your car on your own time. Hobbylinc.com and Maximum-velocity.com are two reputable websites to purchase cars and accessories from. The rules for this class are as follows:
Car Dimension Rules
The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 3/4 inches.
The car must have 1 3/4 inches clearance between the wheels.
The car must have 3/8 inches clearance underneath the body so it does not rub on the track.
Car Weight Rules
The car shall not exceed 141.8 grams or 5.0 ounces and kitchen food scales are not accurate.
The official race scale (in grams) that is used at car check-in shall be considered final.
PLEASE plan an early arrival for inspection and weigh in, to ensure your car is legal before the deadline.
Car Modifications Are Allowed
An official PineWood Derby wood block must be used and can be shaped in any way that is desired.
You may purchase other PineWood Derby wheels or use BSA wheels. The wheels may be cut, drilled, beveled or rounded.
You may remove the seams and imperfections from the wheels.
The axles may be altered, polished and lubricated.
Other Derby Race Rules
Once a car passes inspection and is entered into the race, only race committee members can touch it.
If the car loses a wheel, or is otherwise damaged, the race committee members will repair it onsite.
Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete.
The Inspection Committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet these rules.
