About this Event
The 22nd Annual African American History Awareness Competition (also known as The Black History Quiz Bowl) will be held virtually, February 21st (preliminary rounds), and in-person on February 22nd(championship rounds). Raleigh’s Omega Psi Phi Fraternity graduate chapter, Iota Iota, founded this event and has sponsored it annually since 2003, usually during Black History Month.
Teams compete by answering questions centered around local, national and international African American history in a multi-round format throughout the event. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation, along with other gifts commemorating the event. This year’s event will include the presentation of Local Legend awards, recognizing the outstanding historical impact of members of the local community.
Traditionally, the winning high school team goes on to compete at the statewide level for a chance to compete at the annual Sixth District competition, to be held in Raleigh this year in late April.
Students in 3rd grade through 12th grade are encouraged to participate. Only one team per elementary, middle or high school may register to compete. Schools and organizations that serve multiple educational levels (elementary, middle and high), may register one team to compete at each level. For example, a K-8 school may field one elementary and one middle school team. A complete list of 2025 rules will be made available to all registered participants.
