The event is rooted in the heritage of the Klondike Gold Rush, a historic migration in which an estimated 100,000 prospectors traveled to the Klondike region of the Yukon Territory between 1896 and 1899 after gold was discovered on August 16, 1896. When news reached Seattle and San Francisco the following year, it sparked a massive stampede north.
