We are the experiences that we have, and we are what experiences those experiences. This enigmatic paradox is at the heart of Individual Psychology. Decades before the modern day advances in neuropsychology unlocked the secrets of the brain, Adler had a concept of an entirely contextually embedded self, developed through the dynamic exchange between biology, human transactions, and culture. As humans, we have inherited sensory, linguistic, and cognitive apparatus that set the parameters for what we can experience, comprehend, and achieve. Through the range and limits of this potentiality, lived experiences give definition, directionality, and expectancies that further shape and inform our evolving and striving sense of self. Yet, unfettered by these conditions, a creative aspect allows us to make novel meaning out of the experiences, and to divine new purpose under opportune circumstances. This presentation is an exploration on what it means to be human, and how we can make better use of the things that happen to us, by way of our own distinctive, living context.
