About this Event
Join us at El Espacio 23 to meet our 2025 WOPHA Artists-in-Residence: Kat Thompson, Nathyfa Michel and the WOPHA + CCI Fellow, Celia Irina González. Enjoy Open Studios and a conversation moderated by Iberia Pérez González, the Andrew W. Mellon Caribbean Cultural Institute Curatorial Associate at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).
The WOPHA Artist-in-Residence program provides a month-long residency in Miami for national and international women photographers, fostering deep connections with South Florida’s academic and creative communities.
About the artists
Kat Thompson is a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in Virginia. She holds an MFA in Photography and Film from Virginia Commonwealth University and a BFA in Photography from George Mason University. Rooted in her Jamaican heritage, Thompson’s lens-based practice spans photography, textiles, sculptural collage, and installation to explore Black selfhood within the African Diaspora
Nathyfa Michel is a Caribbean photographer born in Réunion Island, to a Guianese father and a French mother. Her practice focuses on the intricate layers of Caribbean and Amazonian identity at the intersection of intimate and collective history. She explores dynamics of transmission, searching for a "home" reinvented through rhizomatic and hybrid imagination.
Celia Irina González is a Cuban artist living and working in Mexico City. Her work explores the effects of state and military control on civil life and the possibilities of marine life. Through her fellowship, González will expand her series “Looking with the Bone,” a speculative video installation describing the human-chiton relationship. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico City, and a Masters in Visual Anthropology from FLACSO, Ecuador.
