The Sussex Conservation District (SCD) is excited to announce its third annual native tree giveaway, part of the Tree for Every Delawarean Initiative (TEDI). The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Vanderwende-Evans Conservation Center, located at 23818 Shortly Road, Georgetown. The event will be held rain or shine.
There will be 500 native trees available, distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of one tree per person. Each tree will include a tag with a QR code linking to the TEDI Tracker. Recipients are encouraged to register their tree on the TEDI Tracker, which documents both organized and independent plantings across the state. To date, over 350,000 trees have been planted through this initiative since 2020.
“We’re thrilled to host this event for the third year in a row,” said Jessica Watson, SCD Sediment and Stormwater Program Manager. “Native trees are vital to Delaware’s environmental resilience, providing essential benefits such as shade, wildlife habitat, temperature regulation, air quality improvement, and stormwater runoff mitigation. I urge all Sussex County residents to participate in this initiative and help us build a more sustainable future.”
Attendees are encouraged to visit the TEDI website for guidance on selecting, planting, and caring for their trees. Nine different species will be available. Red maple and white oak will be available in both one- and three-gallon sizes. Three-gallon species also include eastern redbud, persimmon, red cedar, river birch, southern magnolia, sweetbay magnolia, and white dogwood.
The Tree for Every Delawarean Initiative is implemented and managed by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), with support from the Delaware Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry (UFC) Program and other key partners.
