About this Event
The Montgomery County History Conference returns November 8 at Montgomery College’s Germantown Campus in the Bioscience Education Center. The conference offers myriad opportunities to engage with local history, including a keynote address, ten breakouts, a boxed lunch, a closing discussion panel, and a happy hour reception.
The Conference
This year's conference will focus on the 250-year history of Montgomery County and the myriad changes that have made Montgomery County what it is today.
The conference will open with a presentation by celebrated local historian Ralph Buglass as he presents Montgomery Montage: A 250-Year Tapestry of Time, People, and Place, which will set the stage for semiquincentennial celebrations over the coming year.
Breakout sessions will cover such wide-ranging topics as student and citizen activism during the Vietnam era, the history of the Gaithers and Howards of Maryland, Alexander Hanson and the right to protest, the creation of Montgomery County's Moderately Priced Dwelling Unit program, elected women of color in the county, the fair housing movement, the county's connection to the conservation movement, the early slave trade in Montgomery County, the design and intent of the Montgomery County Detention Center, and the ceding of Georgetown to Washington, D.C.
We will end the conference with Montgomery County at 250: Looking Back to Move Forward, a panel discussion on the next 250 years of our county. At the conclusion of the conference, you’ll want to catch up with old friends and meet new ones at our happy hour reception.
All conference sessions will be recorded and recordings are included in the ticket price.
