More About the Thomas R. Keating Competition
The Indianapolis Press Club established this annual contest in 1986 as a tribute to former Indianapolis Star columnist Thomas R. Keating. The competition celebrates great storytelling across multiple genres. Students are encouraged to submit their best published piece of journalism – news, features, sports or columns – to be considered for 10 spots in the competition, which is Oct. 24-25 in Indianapolis.

Keynote Speaker: Scott Swan, 13NEWS Anchor, WTHR
Scott Swan began working for WTHR in 2002 and anchors central Indiana's #1 rated 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts for 13News.
In 2019, Swan was honored with the national Sigma Delta Chi award for TV Feature Reporting for his story about the "Bearded Painter." It is a story about an Indiana man who miraculously became a gifted painter after suffering a health issue similar to a stroke.
In 2008 Swan was honored with a National Edward R. Murrow award and a National Headliner award for "Mission Complete" - a story about an Indiana Marine who lost both legs in a roadside bomb attack in Iraq.
Swan has landed many exclusives during his WTHR career. He was the only Indianapolis reporter to conduct an interview with former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in his Las Vegas home.
Swan conducted the first TV interview with John Mellencamp before the musician launched his "No Better Than This" tour.
Prior to his career at WTHR, Swan worked at KTVX-TV in Salt Lake City, WISH-TV in Indianapolis, KITV-TV in Honolulu, KESQ-TV in Palm Springs, KHJ-TV in Los Angeles, and Disneyland Broadcast Services.
Swan enjoys talking about his Christian faith and speaks at churches and prisons across Indiana. He also volunteers with the Lamplighter Ministry Inc. in Indianapolis. Swan is the author of the 365-day devotion, "The Hope You Need Today."
Swan graduated with a broadcast journalism degree from Pepperdine University in 1985.
