MEET CHARLIE YOUNG
Charlie Young is a native of Norfolk, Virginia. Presently residing in the Washington, DC, he is Coordinator of Instrumental Jazz Studies and Professor of Saxophone at Howard University.
Young has had a rich career performing and recording with various ensembles including the National Symphony Orchestra, the US Navy Band, the Count Basie Orchestra, and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. He is published on over 35 CD recordings, including his own release “So Long Ago.” Mr. Young has shared the concert stage with artists ranging from Clark Terry and Ella Fitzgerald to Stevie Wonder and Quincy Jones. Performance venues have ranged from London's Royal Albert Hall to New York's Carnegie Hall.
Charlie Young has been a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra for over 35 years where he presently serves as Artistic Director/Conductor and lead saxophonist. Young joined the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra in 1995 and has served as the ensemble's principal woodwind specialist for over 15 years. In 2013, he was appointed Artistic Director and Conductor.
Mr. Young is a recognized clinician in the field of music education as well as classical and jazz saxophone performance. Clinic presentations in Brazil, Venezuela, Chile, Egypt, Kenya, South Africa, and Japan have earned him a stellar reputation among the most respected in saxophone performance and education.

You're invited to the Cougar Jazz Cafe where you can listen to special musical performances by FCC student and faculty while enjoying dinner (choose to bring your own meal or make a purchase from our food truck (vendor tba).

JAZZ FESTIVAL DAYTIME WORKSHOPS | 10:00 AM to 5:00PM
Did you hear? Our Jazz Festival also includes daytime workshops designed exclusively for middle and high school students earlier in the day. All instruments are welcome and prior jazz and/or improvisation experience is not necessary.
