About Sickle Cell Disease Association of America - Mobile Chapter, Inc.:

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited group of disorders that affects the red blood cells (RBC), which causes the red blood cells to contort into a sickle shape. The cells die early, leaving a shortage of healthy red blood cells (sickle cell anemia), and can block blood flow causing pain (sickle cell crisis). The effects of SCD are not only physical, they are cognitive and emotional as well.

SCD affects approximately 700 individuals in the SCDAA-MC nine-county service area of Alabama including: Mobile, Baldwin, Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Covington, Escambia, Monroe, and Washington.

SCDAA-MC's mission is "Empowering our clients and families with knowledge, through quality comprehensive programs and services." The programs and services that the association offers include:

  • Case management services to help clients with disease and their families cope financially and emotionally

  • Summer Enrichment Program,
  • Transportation assistance
