The STEM Educational Institute, Inc. (SEI) is a nonprofit corporation with the mission to end generational poverty through free programming in the areas of STEM, Financial Literacy, and Mental Health. We provide programming that gives underrepresented high school students the technological skills needed to enter today’s workforce while building generational wealth.

The STEM Educational Institute is a program that serves as a career bridge for high school students to enter into STEM fields and college majors. Students participate in a one-year program that starts in the summer. Upon completion of the program, students receive a college scholarship and ongoing support through our alumni platform.

Meet our honoree, Dr. Ushma Neill, Vice President of Scientific Education and Training at Memorial Sloan Kettering.

As Vice President of Scientific Education and Training at Memorial Sloan Kettering, Dr. Ushma Neill coordinate and lead the academic, strategic, financial, and operational plans for the five graduate school programs at MSK and with partners at Weill Cornell Medicine and Rockefeller University, the large postdoctoral population, and the scientific internship programs for high school and undergrad students. Her areas of focus include enhancing the career and professional development opportunities available to trainees as well as designing courses in areas such as statistics, computational biology, and imaging. She has launched and championed pipeline programs for those who are underrepresented in science. Dr. Neill first came to MSK in 2012 as Director of the Office of the President, serving as the Chief of Staff to then President and CEO Craig B. Thompson.

Dr. Neill obtained her BS, MS, and PhD degrees in biomedical engineering at Northwestern University, studying cardio-pulmonary mechanics. With a PhD obtained by the time she was 24, she then used a Marshall Scholarship to study the cardiovascular system as a postdoctoral fellow at Imperial College, London.

After her postdoc, she spent two years as a manuscript editor at Nature Medicine, and then joined the Journal of Clinical Investigation as Executive Editor. During nine years in this role, she led academic editorial boards at Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania, and Duke University/University of North Carolina in identifying, soliciting, and peer reviewing high-quality scientific manuscripts. She also wrote countless news pieces and editorials, and now serves as the chief interviewer for the JCI video series “Conversations with Giants in Medicine.” Her editorials have focused on integrity in science, immigrant causes, HPV vaccination, sexism in science, as well as community outreach. Dr. Neill also led the Students in Temporary Housing committee of the district 2 school board (community education council) for 3 years and continues to volunteer with and champion donations/outreach for this population.
