As we embrace Autism Acceptance Month this April, we're thrilled to announce an upcoming event at the University of Southern Indiana on April 25th, dedicated to enhancing the lives of local children and families impacted by autism. Through a collaboration between the University of Southern Indiana and Optimal ACCESS, we're eager to introduce this innovative initiative to the tri-state area!
Did you know that 1 in 36 children are now diagnosed with autism? With these rates on the rise, we must continue to advance scientific research, leading to more effective diagnosis, treatment, and support for these children, all infused with compassion. Our heartfelt mission is to disseminate this vital information to our community of helping professionals, ultimately enhancing outcomes and fostering a more informed and inclusive community.
This program is open to a wide range of individuals, including physicians, nurses, mental health professionals, area providers, students, and parents. Together, let's join hands in creating a brighter, more supportive future for all those affected by autism in our community.
Join us in extending a heartfelt welcome to Dr. Elizabeth Torres, an esteemed figure in autism research hailing from Rutgers University and her Sensory-Motor Integration Lab. Her insightful keynote promises to shed light on crucial aspects of the autism diagnosis.
Additionally, we are privileged to host Elizabeth Bonker, an extraordinary advocate and presenter who defies stereotypes. As a recent graduate and Valedictorian of Rollins College, her inspiring graduation speech captivated hearts worldwide, garnering over 4 billion views. Through her unique perspective, she invites us to reconsider the potential of students often labeled as "low functioning."
Throughout the day, we'll be joined by a diverse array of presenters and panelists, each contributing to our collective journey of reimagining autism. Notably, Suzanne Oliver, a trailblazing neurologic music therapist - Fellow, will share her innovative approaches to rhythm-based sensory-motor interventions. These easily implemented strategies offer invaluable support to individuals navigating complex movement challenges, aligning closely with the themes explored in our conference discussions.
Above all, our aim for this event is to empower our medical and mental health community with insights gleaned from both scientific inquiry and the lived experiences of autistic individuals. Together, let us embark on a day of learning, empathy, and meaningful dialogue.
