Started in February 2020, the PVD Cello Fest is an event committed to enriching the music scene in Providence by presenting concerts and educational workshops that celebrate the versatility of the cello. By hosting concerts in different types of venues and showcasing the instrument in many different styles and genres, PVD Cello Fest aims to build new connections within the community and foster curiosity about what is possible on the cello.

Cello Fest Kicks off with an exciting evening of multi-genre cellos! Jake Sokolov, James Perretta, Flannery Brown, Prior Panic, and Rob Bethel perform folk music, alternative songs, experimental music, improvised music, and music for viola da gamba! Additionally, a trio of Isabel Castellvi, Kamyron Williams, and Zan Berry will premiere a new cello trio by local composer Tom Swafford!

Saturday, May 18th

The day will open with a workshop open to all levels: Brazilian Rhythms and Techniques for Strings, led by our 2024 guest artist Kely Pinheiro. Throughout the day, you can come join an old-time music jam led by local musicians, and there will be performances by cellists Ted Mook, Adrienne Taylor, Isabel Castellvi and Kumar Das (tabla), Laura Cetilia, Kari Juusela and Sidy Maiga (djembe), and cello quartet performances from local high school students.. We will end the afternoon with a large group rendition of Terry Riley’s minimalist work, In C!

Cello Fest concludes with a night of traditional and original Brazilian music featuring our headliner, Kely Pinheiro! Kely will do a solo set of music for cello and voice and she will be joined by a cello ensemble, playing a range of Brazilian music.

All Cello Fest events are ticketed based on a pay what you can model, with all donations going directly to support festival musicians.
