THE 2024 IOWA SUMMIT ON JUSTICE & DISPARITIES CONVENES OFFICIALS, ADVOCATES AND CITIZENS TO ADDRESS EQUITY IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM
GEORGIA STATE CRIMINOLOGISTS DRS. THADDEUS AND NATASHA JOHNSON KEYNOTE
Des Moines...The 2024 Iowa Summit on Justice & Disparities will convene on December 17, 2024, marking its 12th year as a transformative platform for collaborative action and innovative solutions to Iowa’s stark racial disparities in the justice system. This information-packed, solutions-oriented event brings together advocates, justice professionals, policymakers, and concerned citizens to collaborate on ensuring a fair and equitable justice system. It also serves as an annual check-in on the most significant developments within Iowa’s justice landscape. The December 17 event will take place from 8 AM to 5 PM at the FFA Enrichment Center,1055 SW Prairie Trail Parkway, Ankeny Iowa.
This year, the Summit welcomes an extraordinary keynote team: Dr. Thaddeus Johnson and Dr. Natasha Johnson, criminologists and professors from Georgia State University. Dr. Thaddeus Johnson, a former law enforcement officer, and Dr. Natasha Johnson, a lifelong educator, bring unique perspectives on equity, education, and systemic reform. Their presentations will explore artificial intelligence in policing and smart policy transformation.
According to the Prison Policy Initiative, The Sentencing Project, Iowa NAACP, ACLU of Iowa and other local and national sources, Iowa continues to rank among the top states for overrepresentation of African Americans in the criminal justice system. The Sentencing Project data reveals that Black Iowans are incarcerated at a rate nine times higher than their White counterparts. Other minority groups, including Native and Latinx communities, are also critically overrepresented, while alarming disparities persist in the juvenile justice system.
“Whether you are an educator, pastor, police officer, student, legislator, social worker, or community leader, you have a role to play in ensuring justice that works for everyone,” said Betty Andrews, Summit founder and President of the NAACP Iowa-Nebraska State Area Conference. “We’ve seen progress over the last decade, but Iowa still faces troubling disparities in its justice system. These statistics represent real lives impacted by inequities. Together, we can change that.”
Workshops and presentations will cover crucial topics, including juvenile justice reform, reentry strategies, jury diversity, racial profiling, community/law enforcement relationships, victim support, mental health in justice, legislative reforms, and more. The Summit has successfully inspired significant law and policy changes in Iowa and has served as a model for other states, including the successful launch of the Nebraska Summit on Justice & Disparities earlier this year.
Early registration is $149 through November 27, with regular rates thereafter. Group, student, and vendor rates are available. Continuing Legal Education (CLE) and Continuing Education Units (CEU) are offered for attendees seeking credits. Early registration is encouraged as seating is limited.
