As the name suggests, the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is a global effort to reduce litter, specifically marine debris. As a coastal city, the effects of marine debris go beyond just looking unsightly. Litter often collects in storm drains where it is carried out to the rivers and then washed back on shore. Storm drains get clogged, litter ends up on our streets, and in our parks, and our waterways get contaminated making them unsafe to humans and animals alike.
Beyond reducing litter, the ICC works to collect litter data. We'll have pre-made tracking sheets to use during the cleanup to tally how many pieces, and what types, of litter we find. It's community science with a global impact!
