About this Event

It’s no secret that we are living in a polarized world. The differences between us often manifest themselves in troubling communication patterns, even when we have similar goals. Even in the healing arts, where the interest of the patient is paramount, conflicts arise and we often resort to ineffective habits, to the detriment of the achievement of greater goals. Practicing civility is key to effective communication. While often confused with politeness, civility is more about authentically sharing one’s feelings and basis for making value judgements on important issues. It is honestly providing insights into one's moral code in a setting of respectfulness. It is not free from the judgement of others but demonstrates a willingness to put one's thoughts into the public arena for scrutiny. As such, this session will include articulating the characteristics of a civil communicator, identifying strategies for civil listening, and modeling and practicing Civil Dialogue®. Civility embraces disagreement, not pursuing agreement. Not expressing one’s viewpoint for fear of disagreement is the antithesis of civility. Expressing varied thoughts, values, beliefs, and opinions in a context of civility is the goal of this workshop.
