Come attend (in person or virtually) the 2024 Ed Ricketts Memorial Award at the Sanctuary Exploration Center on September 25, 2024 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. Pacific Time. This year's award will be presented to Dr. Daniel P. Costa, a distinguished professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and the former Director of the Institute of Marine Sciences at U.C. Santa Cruz. Dr. Costa is a globally acknowledged authority on the physiology, ecology, and behavior of marine mammals. His research, deeply rooted in oceanography and Earth history, has been instrumental in the development and application of electronic tags for tracking marine mammals and gathering oceanographic data. His leadership roles at regional, national, and international levels further underscore his influence in the field.
Dr. Costa's talk "Beyond Pacific Tides: How Technology Has Provided a Window into the Secret Life of Marine Mammals," will examine how technology has provided insights into the behavior and physiology of marine mammals in nature.
The Ed Ricketts Memorial Award was created to honor scientists who have exhibited exemplary work throughout their career and advanced the status of knowledge in the field of marine science. The first award was presented in March 1986 at a conference at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Recipients are selected by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary research activity panel.
