Keynote Session - Wired for Connection delivered by Jennifer Rosinia, PhD, OTR, Trainer, Erikson Institute and President at Kid Links Unlimited, Inc.
Keynote Summary: Neurons that fire together, wire together! In Early Childhood we talk a lot about the importance of relationships but what does that really mean? Researchers who study neuroscience and behavior have discovered that one of the biggest moderators of human health is having good human relationships. In this Keynote session we’ll celebrate the fact that we are neurologically wired to connect, and we’ll examine the ways in which these connections with each other serve us well in our work with young children.
The Anatomy of a Meltdown - is the follow-up workshop that will be delivered by Jennifer Rosinia, PhD, OTR after the keynote session from 10:15 AM - 11:15 AM and again 11:30 AM - 12:30 AM. Workshop summary: It’s easy to get overwhelmed, frustrated and even angry when a child is having a meltdown. This experience is hard for both the person having the meltdown, as well as for anyone present at the time. In this session we will begin with a brief review of the stress response system and an introduction to sensory processing. Building upon this information, participants will learn what happens to the body when feeling overwhelmed, under attack, hijacked and helpless. Three distinct stages of a meltdown will be described and discussed beginning with the identification of some triggers, signs and symptoms that may indicate a meltdown is starting. Appropriate prevention and intervention strategies at each stage will be provided and discussed.
