About this Event

DirtsGiving – A Queer Camping Holiday

(This event is not part of an organized group or event. 1 ticket per camper)

Thursday, November 27th Through Sunday, December 1st: Join us for five days in the desert.

We have a group site at Cottonwood Campground at the southern entrance of Joshua Tree National Park. All participants will need the following:

• $30 National Park Entrance (per vehicle)

• 1 Sharable Dish: We are holding a communal meal on Thursday night. Impress us with your culinary skills (or shopping savviness with a Costco tray).

• Two Bundles of Wood: if we all bring a bundle (or two), then we will avoid local price gouging.

IT WILL BE COLD AT NIGHT!!!!- I can’t stress this enough. This is winter camping – and last year, temperatures were at or below freezing. Down is your best friend, and ensure your bags are comfort-rated to below 30 degrees. Last year I was cold in a 17F bag. It’s worth it; the stars are astonishing, and the days are incredible.

The landscape around Cottonwood is that of the Colorado Desert, which encompasses the southern edge of the park and a large portion of Southern California. Rather than being surrounded by large rock formations and uniquely shaped Joshua trees, like campgrounds in the northern section, this facility overlooks flat, open-desert shrubland. It is also further from towns or cities that would contribute to light pollution. As a result, it offers wide, dark, and uninterrupted views of the night sky that draw astronomers and amateur sky watchers alike.

Hammocks are not allowed.

Attaching lines to vegetation, including Joshua trees and junipers, is prohibited. Hammocks, slacklines, and other horizontal ropes must be tied to rocks and climbing bolts and are not permitted in campgrounds.

Food must be stored securely where wildlife cannot get to it. Any scented or odorous items, including sunscreen and toiletries, must be secured as if they were food.

Pets must remain on a leash at all times and may not be left unattended.

No slacklines in campgrounds.

This campground is limited to tent camping only; recreational vehicles and habitable trailers are prohibited.

Don’t Move Firewood: Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood near the park and burning it on-site, and do not use park vegetation, living or dead, for fuel.

No glass containers

Quiet Hours are 10:00 pm to 6:00 am

Fires out completely by 11 pm

Please be respectful of other campers and Mother Nature: Share the space, Build lasting friendships, and Leave with good memories.

If you have questions - please contact Jennifer Lloyd with specific questions.
