About this Event
The British Chinese Language Teaching Society (BCLTS) is delighted to announce that the 2024 International Conference on Teaching and Learning Chinese in Higher Education will be held from Thursday, 4th July to Saturday, 6th July at Newcastle University, UK. The theme is Critical Perspectives on International Chinese Education: Synergising Language, Culture, and Technology in the Era of Digital Intelligence. The conference is collaboratively organised by BCLTS, Confucius Institute at Newcastle University and School of Modern Languages, Chinese Studies, at Newcastle University.
Six leading experts are invited to approach the conference theme and present keynote lectures.

Travelling to Newcastle
By Plane:
Newcastle International Airport is only about seven miles north west of Newcastle University. A taxi from the Airport will take about 20 minutes, costing around £25-30. Arrow Cars are the Airport's resident taxi firm. Their desk is based inside of the terminal next to international arrivals and is well signposted. You can book and pay for your taxi at the desk or you can book and pay in advance on their website. There is a taxi rank at the front of the terminal.
You can also travel by Metro (rapid transit system, Metro trains run every 6-12 minutes) to the Haymarket which will take about 25 minutes and cost around £4.30-5.40. The University is adjacent to Haymarket Metro Station.
By Train:
London North Eastern Railway offers a frequent and direct service linking London Kings Cross to Scotland via Newcastle with regular stops in Doncaster, York, Darlington, Berwick and Edinburgh. You can hop on an LNER train at London Kings Cross and be in the heart of Newcastle city centre in under 3 hours. The brand new Azuma trains from LNER are now in circulation so get ready to travel to Newcastle in style!
Other key train operators which travel to Newcastle include Northern Rail and TransPennine Express, which have regular services connecting Newcastle to the North West, Teesside, Cumbria, Northumberland and stations across Yorkshire.
Newcastle Central Station is in the heart of the city making your onward journey quick and simple. The station is within walking distance of many central destinations including Grey’s Monument, the Quayside, St James’ Park and city-centre attractions. Hop off the train and you are well connected to the rest of the region by Metro, Quay Link, bus and taxi. Newcastle’s historic Central Station offers facilities including a travel information centre; cash machines; ticket printing machines; toilets; coffee shops and cafes; shops and a bar to grab a drink before your journey.
From Newcastle Central Station you can take the Metro to Haymarket (two stops, which should cost no more than £4.30), which is adjacent to the Newcastle University.
By Car:
From the north or south, follow the A1 towards Newcastle. Leave the A1 (Western Bypass) at the junction with the A167/A696 and follow signs for the 'City Centre'. Take the A167 exit marked 'Universities and Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)' which brings you on to Claremont Road.
Public parking:
Public parking is available Monday to Friday 17.00 to 00.00, Saturday and Sunday 06.00 to 00.00 at Castle Leazes, Marris House, Windsor Terrace, and various campus locations. Public parking bays are clearly marked by signage. Parking tariffs apply and can be paid via the Pay by Phone app. Enforcement action will be taken if public parking conditions are breached.
While there's limited car parking at the university, our John Dobson Street car park is just over five minutes' walk away, making it perfect for students and visitors, alike. Limited car parking is available at the Newcastle University Campus from 4pm onwards at a cost of £1 per hour.

By Coach:
Travel to Newcastle from across the length and breadth of the UK by Megabus or National Express.
The Megabus stops in the centre of Newcastle on John Dobson Street, beside Newcastle City Library which is a 2-minute walk to Monument Metro station. The National Express Bus Service stops at Newcastle Coach Station which is a 10-minute walk from Central Station. Both Newcastle coach services provide easy onward travel across Newcastle and the coach stations are located within close proximity to a wide range of city centre accommodation.
