Bringing Counseling and Cultural Humility to Clinical Supervision
Course summary
This workshop will focus on elements of counseling strategies from the STAAR framework and will integrate practices that support development and growth of cultural humility in supervisors and students. Discussions, materials, and small-group activities will utilize active learning to build supervisors' confidence and competence in supporting our students holistically.
This workshop will be offered in person and via Zoom (link provided after registration).
Speaker Bio
Amber Franklin is an Associate Professor of Speech Pathology and Audiology at Miami University—Ohio. Her research and teaching interests include cross-linguistic and child phonology, Eastern Caribbean English dialects, scholarship of teaching and learning, and counseling strategies. Dr. Franklin was named Miami’s Associated Student Government Outstanding Professor of the Year (2017); is an Ohio Life Magazine, Excellence in Education Honoree (2018); and has received a Senatorial Citation from Ohio’s General Assembly for her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Explain the StARR framework of counseling.
- Describe attributes of cultural humility and responsiveness
- Apply principles of adaptive leadership to counseling and supervision.
- Identify challenges in counseling and supervision and reflect on strategies to address challenges.

UW Speech and Hearing Sciences is launching a mentoring network for graduate students of historically marginalized backgrounds.
- The network will connect incoming master's students to community mentors- Mentors of all backgrounds and identities are needed!- No mentoring experience is necessary. It is not expected that all mentors will be from historically marginalized backgrounds.- In service of wellbeing and support, the program will include mentor training and guidance/structure for the mentor-mentee dyads. Time commitment will be minimal and predictable.
