About this Event
This two-day case-based course provides physical therapists (PTs) and physical therapist assistants (PTAs) with comprehensive practical knowledge and skill in the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal dysfunction in the pregnant patient. Required competency testing will be integrated into the course and there will also be a post-course on-line examination. Cases covering low back and pelvic girdle pain, pubic symphysis separation, carpal tunnel syndrome, and transient osteoporosis in pregnancy will provide the clinician with extensive skill and knowledge for clinical decision making for this unique population. Cases will include evidence for, and psychomotor competency in, manual therapy options for this population, exercise interventions, belts, supports and orthoses for this population, as well as discussion on indications and contraindications for physical agent usage during the childbearing year. Outcome measures will be discussed as they apply to the cases. The course will also provide background in maternal physiology and anatomic changes of pregnancy, events of labor and delivery, positioning options for labor and delivery for those with preexisting musculoskeletal dysfunction, body-mechanics considerations for the obstetric client, and an introduction to the postpartum period. Etiology and the pathophysiology of perinatal pelvic floor dysfunction and diastasis recti abdominis will be covered.
