About this Event

Join West End Synagogue for 2022/5783 High Holy Days.

All are welcome!

What a year it has been. As we approach the year of 5783, which will commence in the secular calendar on the 25th of September, we gaze longingly into our future with a hope for repair and return. This year, we will seek to repair frayed connections and form stronger bonds with one another, embracing the West End community from Lincoln Towers to Brooklyn to Ohio to Germany. And we will continue the process of return as we prepare to lift off into our 36th year with our brand new elevator. Finally, this year— after 2 years of unusual High Holy Day services—we will return to our High Holy Day traditions of years past, gathering at the Fourth Universalist Society on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Please read on for important information about how you can join us as, together, we enter this new time.

Services: This year, in order to allow for greater numbers of attendees and social distancing, as well as physically accessible entrances, we will be holding all High Holy Day Services at the Fourth Universalist Society at 160 Central Park West. Services this year will be hybrid/multi-access (on Zoom and in person) for members in good standing and for guests who have purchased tickets. Due to COVID, all in-person attendees at Fourth Universalist must be masked and vaccinated as recommended by the CDC. We will also have an outdoor service and picnic on the afternoon of 2nd Day Rosh Hashanah open to members and guests, including unvaccinated children and adults. Please see the below schedule for specific timing for each service.

Schedule:

  • Sep 25 Sunday at 6:30pm - Erev Rosh Hashanah service
  • Sep 26 Monday at 10am - First Day of Rosh Hashanah (10am Morning Service, 11:15am Torah Service, 12:45pm Musaf, 2pm In-Person Tashlich at 66th & Riverside Drive)
  • Sep 27 Tuesday at 10am - Second Day of Rosh Hashanah (10am-1:30pm, followed by 3:30pm Intergenerational Outdoor Program at Riverside Park's Northlawn @80th St.)
  • Oct 4 Tuesday at 6:15pm - Kol Nidre service
  • Oct 5 Wednesday at 10am - Yom Kippur (10am Morning Service, 11:15am Torah Service,12:45pm Musaf, 2pm break, 5:30pm Mincha & Avodah, 6:45pm Neilah & Havdalah)

Tickets: This year, once again, instead of fixing a price per ticket, we are asking for contributions (donations) from $36 to $360 per guest, based on what you can afford. Our guideline is below:

  • $36 if you have no income and/or cannot pay for necessities
  • $72 if you are a student and/or on very limited income
  • $90 (special) if it's the first time you're joining us for High Holy Days
  • $180 if you are able to pay your bills comfortably
  • $270 if you are able to pay your bills, save, and spend on some extras
  • $360 if you are able to help subsidize these services for others

We welcome everybody, regardless of financial situation. Donations can be paid here with credit card or PayPal. A 2.5% fee will be added by Eventbrite.

Membership: This is a great opportunity to become a West End Synagogue member: your High Holy Days donation can be deducted from your 2022 membership dues (currently at $500 for members that join between July 1st and High Holy Days). New members also pay only 50% of their fair share dues in the second year (2023) — with a minimum of $750, which already includes High Holy Days tickets. Click here to learn more about membership.

Zoom access: After you enter your donation amount, provide your payment information and answer some simple questions, you will receive an Eventbrite confirmation email, and will be automatically registered on Zoom for services. In the confirmation email you will find instructions on how the guests in your party should register on Zoom. A few days before High Holy Days, each registered guest will receive a Zoom email with the link to join services.

Children's and Family Programming: We will have opportunities throughout the High Holy Days for children and teens to gather for prayer, community, and creative learning. Please see the below schedule for specific offerings and reach out to [email protected] for specific questions. Children must be vaccinated, and children over the age of 2 must be masked for all indoor programming except when eating and drinking.

  • Sep 26 Monday at 10am - First Day of Rosh Hashanah (10am Kids Programming, 11:30am Children's Service)
  • Sep 27 Tuesday at 10am - Second Day of Rosh Hashanah (3:30pm Intergenerational Outdoor Program at Riverside Park's Northlawn @80th St.)
  • Oct 5 Wednesday at 10am - Yom Kippur (10am Kids Programming, 11:30am Children's Service)

We look forward to celebrating and being together as a community in the coming year. If you have questions or special needs, please call Joan Erber, Synagogue Administrator, at 212-579-0777, ext. 220.
