NBC News’ Lester Holt, whose seasoned career in journalism over four decades and role as anchor of NBC Nightly News has earned him the title as most-trusted anchor in America, will receive the National Press Club’s most esteemed prize, the Fourth Estate Award, at a gala in his honor on Oct. 20, 2021.
Holt is the 49th recipient of the award, which recognizes journalists who have made significant contributions to the field.
The 2021 Fourth Estate Award Gala will take place at the National Press Club and online, with Lester Holt joining us live from New York to accept his award. Guests in the Washington, D.C., area can join us in person for an elegant dinner and black-tie celebration in the ballroom of the National Press Club, where you can watch the virtual program on the big screen while enjoying time with your colleagues and friends at your tables. Vaccination and masking are required, and on-site rapid testing will be available.
We are excited to host this year’s program in our virtual ballroom as well. The virtual space allows you to “table hop” and mingle with the honorees and friends - old and new - before and after the program, as well as chat throughout the award ceremony.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. ET virtually and in person. The program will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Ticket-holders will receive information, as well as tips for having a great experience, via email the week prior to the event.
Whether you're able to join in person or from the comfort of your own home, the gala promises to be a special night to celebrate and support great journalism.
Holt will be the 49th recipient of the Fourth Estate Award, which recognizes journalists who have made significant contributions to the field. Previous winners include Susan Zirinsky, Marty Baron, Dean Baquet, Wolf Blitzer, Gwen Ifill, Andrea Mitchell, Amanda Bennett, Walter Cronkite, Christiane Amanpour, and many others.
The evening also will honor the winners of the John Aubuchon Press Freedom Awards, Haze Fan and Danny Fenster. Fan is a Chinese citizen who has been detained in Beijing while working for Bloomberg, and Fenster is the managing editor of Frontier Myanmar who has been jailed in Myanmar since May 24.
The Marshall Project, a nonprofit news organization covering the U.S. criminal justice system, will receive the National Press Club Journalism Institute’s 2021 Neil and Susan Sheehan Award for Investigative Journalism. The Marshall Project partners with national and local media outlets to reach diverse audiences and produces deeply researched narratives with resource-strapped newsrooms. Its work informs criminal justice experts, policymakers, elected officials, and other journalists.
The fundraiser, attended by hundreds of journalists and media luminaries, raises the majority of the operating expenses for the Club’s nonprofit affiliate, the National Press Club Journalism Institute.
