About this Event
A screening of Stanley Kubrick's pioneering space epic '2001: A Space Odyssey' (1968), part of our 'Cult Classics' series at the Beecroft Cinema Club.
"I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that...”
Beecroft Cinema Club presents 'Cult Classics' series, screening the iconic films that fans are frenzied for on the last Thursday of each month on the big screen at the Beecroft Art Gallery.
For the first screening of 2026, we're blasting off with visionary director Stanley Kubrick's iconic 60's space epic. Controversial on release, the groundbreaking film is now widely regarded as one of the most influential films ever made. The film follows the discovery of a mysterious black monolith on the moon, an indicator of extraterrestrial life and interference. An ambitious American expedition is launched to examine a new monolith discovered on Jupiter. However, during the spacecraft's journey, the ship's computer, HAL 9000, seemingly develops a mind of its own. Characterised by long sequences, sparing dialogue and a powerful classical soundtrack, the film is thematic in nature, exploring the concepts of humanity, evolution and artificial intelligence.
Doors open and refreshments will be available from 6pm and the film will start promptly at 6:30pm (there are no adverts). There is no allocated seating.
The film's run time is 2hrs 29 minutes.
The film is rated 'U' and this event is 12+ only.
