This FREE talk is particularly suited to Year 9 and 10 students and their families, teachers and those interested in the world that is 20,000 leagues under the waves. Open to all!
Submarines are in the news a lot these days – from the AUKUS deal, to the tragic events of the Oceangate Titan Submersible – and they are also important here in Western Australia.
But what do you know about submarines and how they actually work? How do they move under the water, detect objects and rise and fall? How do they support a team of people to spend long periods of time underwater without being crushed? What makes some submarines different to others? And what on earth is a league? Join our special guest, Greg Nancarrow, as he shares his passion for submarines and learn more, not just about submarines, but also about careers in this space and the opportunities ahead.
Greg Nancarrow is a Staff Scientist at Motium. Greg graduate from Physics at Murdoch University and has two decades of research at the University of Western Australia, including research into gravity waves, auditory physiology and paediatric respiratory medicine. He has since worked in the private sector in mining, oil and gas and defence – all areas where a smart, knowledgeable, technical specialist can make a difference. Greg is also a member of the Submarine Institute of Australia, was recognised as WA Innovator of the Year in 2010 and was the Technical Design Authority and Project Manager of the Combat System Shore Facility Upgrade at HMAS Stirling in 2007
